5th Annual Kayak-A-Thon Fundraiser May 1, 2010The date is set for the 5th annual Kayak-a-thon fundraiser. On May 1, 2010 kayakers will paddle their way along a 15 mile course in the Lake Worth Lagoon from the Earman River in North Palm Beach to Peanut Island and back to gather for a celebration. This annual event has become one of the most important fundraising activities of the year for Reef Rescue. Not only does the Kayak-a-thon help raise funds to support Reef Rescue coral reef conservation projects, but it also brings together our family of supporters for a fun filled day of outdoor activity.
Like a walk-a-thon, kayakers raise money by collecting donations or pledges for completing the predetermined course. It is similar in format to other physical activity based fundraising events such as marathons and cycling races, but this low intensity, non-competitive event is ideal for mobilizing broad-based community support. There are several ways to get involved:
|
The trek along the Lake Worth Lagoon focuses on the need to protect the remaining mangroves and seagrass beds; essential habitat for manatees and nursery to local fish populations. Mangroves serve very important functions in the ecology of South Florida. As well as providing habitat and nursery grounds for a wide variety of vertebrates and invertebrates, mangroves recycle nutrients. Seagrass beds are nursery grounds for juvenile fish and are the primary food source for the Florida manatee. ![]() Charity West Palm founder and CEO, Brian Lee (L) presents Ed Tichenor, PBCRR director and Chris Wilkins (R) Reef Rescue Kayak-a-thon project manager with a check from the 2007 Earth Day fundraiser for $7,000.00.
